Amazon Relay Insurance Requirements

Motor Carriers that wish to sign up for Amazon Relay will need to meet the following requirements:

Companies that have W-2 employees must also carry:

  • Workers' Compensation – Must meet state guidelines based on company operations
  • Employer Liability – $100k per occurrence

Regulatory Requirements

Trucking companies driving for Amazon Relay must also meet the following regulatory requirements:

  • An active DOT number with interstate authority
  • A valid MC number with an entity type of "carrier" that is authorized for property
  • A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) safety rating of "satisfactory," "none," or "not rated"
  • Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASIC) scores of
  1. Unsafe Driving – below 60%
  2. HOS Compliance – below 60%
  3. Vehicle Maintenance – below 75%

Amazon Relay Vehicle Requirements

Not all vehicles are suited for Amazon Relay as loads are only posted for the following types of vehicles:

  • Tractors – Day cabs or sleeper cabs
  • Trailers – 28 foot trailers (aka pup trailers), 53 foot dry vans, and reefer
  • Box Trucks  26 foot box trucks that:
  1. Are dock height
  2. Have a tuck-under lift gate
  3. Have interior cargo dimensions of at least 26'x8'x8'

How much does insurance for Amazon Relay cost?

While most motor carriers will require additional insurance coverage beyond what Amazon Relay requires, here is roughly what most motor carriers operating a tractor can expect to pay per vehicle:

  • Primary Liability – $1,200 per month
  • Trailer Interchange Coverage – $100 per month
  • Cargo – $300 per month


However, total insurance costs can vary widely based on a variety of factors such as:

  • Other coverage on your policy (physical damage insurance, workers' compensation, OCC/ACC, etc)
  • Policy limit
  • Deductible
  • Driving record
  • Claims history
  • Location
